Mariners Must Take New Approach Following Mather Incident

1 month
Disgraceful. Embarrassing. Disrespectful. All these words, along with plenty others that are not as Family Friendly, are being used to describe the last few days in Mariners baseball. Its sad really. Just when things begin looking up for the Mariners, their PRESIDENT does his best to undermine everything that they have worked for. Now, as we approach the first games of Spring Training, the Mariners now have to adapt to a new strategy: Show me, dont tell me.
During the events that transpired last season, the Mariners were the leaders both on and off the field when it came to doing the right thing. They did not have a single Covid outbreak throughout the entire season which is astonishing considering how many young players were on the roster. Who can forget the unity that the team displayed in a fight for Social Justice throughout the entire season, especially down in San Diego? Or when forest fire smoke took over the entire Pacific Northwest, players throughout the organization shared an outpouring of support to the entire community.
This is the culture that has been created by Jerry Dipoto, Scott Servais and the players. They strive to be leaders within their community. "I love this team!' Servais said on the first day of Spring Training. Then the CEO came out and bashed his own players, one by one, in an absolute dumpster fire of an interview.
For those of you that have been living under a rock, Kevin Mather, the President and CEO of the Seattle Mariners, spoke at the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club at the beginning of February. I won't go into the nitty gritty here but I can tell you that he insulted the two best prospects on the team, blatantly stated that they are messing with Service Time of their young Prospects and bragged about being able to get more money from fans. It... Wasnt pretty.
So what now? Mather has since resigned and is no longer a part of the Mariners Equation. As it should be. But the hurt is still here. Fans are hurt. Julio Rodriguez is hurt. Jarred Kelenic, Kyle Seager, Marco Gonzales, Luis ToRRENS, James Paxton and countless others have been disrespected by the organization. Mather said in his statement that his words to not reflect the sentiments of the club. Multiple times in his tirade he used "we" as in, the Seattle Mariners, believe blah blah blah. To say that your words to not represent the team that are the president of.. well, thats just not how that works.
Moving forward, its all about damage control. Mather may have forced the hands of the Mariners by mentioning service time manipulation. If Jarred Kelenic and Logan Gilbert light the world on fire in Peoria, they may have no choice but to start them in the big leagues. Thus far, they have done a decent job. Jerry Dipoto and Scott Servais have helped ease the blow a bit. They, of course, were left to take the arrows by Owner John Stanton after his Press Conference following the resignation of Kevin Mather.
The players themselves have shared their appreciation for the outpouring of support shared by fans in recent days. The Seattle Mariners official twitter account even took their own jab at Mather by basically calling him out on the Marco Gonzales is "boring" comments. So far so good.
However, this isn't strike one for the team. Over the past decade, the Mariners have faced a myriad of scandals and commotion. Remember the story Geoff Baker wrote about the disfunction within the Jack Z era? Or the claims of Latin American players being lazy? The sexual harassment allegations from Dr. Lorena Martin? This isn't the first time that the Mariners Front Office has made it's way into the tabloids for something they'd rather avoid. Continuously putting yourself in those positions begins to create a stigma. Jerry Dipoto put it best. "This is our stigma now. And it's ours to bear."
There is no easy path forward for the Mariners. As all former issues, baseball will begin and this will eventually find it's way to the back burner. But it will always be there, lingering, nibbling at the Mariners. At some point, it will come back to bite them in the ass. They've somehow escaped all of these events with minimal damage. But when Jarred Kelenic signs with another team in seven years and cites this incident as one of his deciding factors, we will remember that this is much more than just a one man problem. If Mather felt comfortable talking like that about his ballclub, he clearly didnt think it was wrong. Hard to believe that he hasn't talked to anyone else in the front office the way he did this February.
Now, as Spring Training is well underway, we as fans must play the wait and see game. Hoping that this will be the end. We've suffered enough over the last two decades. Having the longest playoff drought in North American Sports is one thing. Now we are just adding gasoline to the fire.
