Granting an extra year of eligibility seems like the right thing to do, but it is not as simple of a decision as you might think. We would end up with a much larger class the following year, would have more athletes to allocate limited scholarships to, and then have to sort that all out with the incoming class of high school recruits. If we could only freeze time and reset everything for the 2021-22 season.

The biggest "loser" is going to be the high school class of 2020. Not only did these kids miss out on proms and the once in a lifetime graduation experience, but their whole college student athlete opportunity just got more difficult. Not only is there a freeze on recruiting, but they are now going to have to compete with another class of upperclassmen for limited spots on the roster.

A big part of the challenge is that we are dealing with a novel coronavirus, and its long-term impact is still not known. It feels like it's been a lifetime, but we have only been dealing with the virus in the States since maybe February.

A student athlete is often in very good health and in great shape, but if contraction leads to a higher risk of a heart condition that could impact the rest of their career or even life, that is certainly something to consider as we try to move forward. Again, there are no easy answers.

Oh my. Will there be any football left at all? A short recovery after a spring season, leading into the fall of 2021 is also a very valid concern, if the leagues decide to play early next year. This is not good at all.

This is the first DI domino to fall. We are less than a month away from the first scheduled games. What in the world is going to happen between now and then? Only time will tell, but so far things are not looking so great.

Noticeably, Division I is absent from the decision. It is unfortunate for student athletes to miss out on these opportunities, but it is a much easier decision for the leagues to make when less money is at stake. Division I sports, namely football and basketball, make up the majority of revenue in an athletic department's budget. The amount of money tied to broadcast rights makes cancelations at that level much harder because so much more is on the line. It would not be surprising to see any decisions on that front pushed back as long as possible.

The next big question is what will Division I do. There is much, much more money at stake if conferences and the National Championship committee close down championships for this fall.

Hopefully the decision by UConn is not going to be a trend (or necessity) for this coming fall.

The checks have been dropped off in the mail. A big thank you to everyone who participated in the Pioneer Day fundraising drive, and gave to their favorite team.

The disruption in college sports continues, this time with a group of student athletes from the Pac-12 demanding changes in order for them to play this season. Change has to, and will happen, but I hope that it does not come at the expense of the sports I love. Also, I hope they will make it all fit into the college athletic model where the revenue sports allow for other sports to financially exist.

Happy Pioneer Day and thank you so much to those that participated in the fundraising drive! BYU came in tops with 5 fans raising $78. We raised a small amount for each Utah program and I will be working on getting the money sent out to each school in the coming week. Here's to the rest of the summer. Stay safe, have fun, and good luck to all of our favorite teams out there as they prepare for the fall.
