This is very good news. It's crazy that student athletes could not qualify for merit scholarships before, without impacting team limits for athletic scholarships offered. The NCAA tries to focus on treating student athletes like any other student, but the old policy restricted players from earned merit scholarship money without hurting their team. This policy change is good news for smaller sports with only partial scholarships available for their athletes.

Non-revenue sports, which encompass most of the college sport teams out there, are in a serious bind. They are having to look for new ways to fund their programs, especially as the money crunch is hitting the big revenue sports, football and basketball. The economic disruption is real, and Pivvt exists to provide a new means of revenue for these teams and athletic programs.

The primary focus of this article is basketball, but even at this point in July, it's hard to say that we will even see football in the fall. The Big Ten and Pac-12 have reduced their schedules to conference only, but that does not guarantee that the country will even be ready to have sporting events happen "on time." There is still so much uncertainty, and that same uncertainty is guaranteed to hurt all athletic departments this year.

Wow. This is really sad to see, and will be a huge disappointment for a bunch of student athletes. I have memories of watching a very talented Men's Volleyball team over the years. If Stanford is struggling financially to keep athletics viable, imagine the turmoil smaller universities around the country must be going through right now.

This is actually one new expense I hadn't thought about before. Because of health insurance, the actual cost of healthcare gets muddied up. Now schools are required to test their athletes to ensure their safety as they play, and will likely have to test frequently. This is not going to be cheap and is an added burden on already cash-strapped programs.

This is actually a really good question, and something I've been wondering for months as I've sat back and watched the sports world shut down. I usually watch college football from my couch anyway, but if we are even able to start, it will be different for sure.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to hit schools and the economic crisis is becoming a bigger issue. Teams are getting shutdown and seasons are getting canceled. The pain is real and student athletes are unfortunate victims of it all.

This is an interesting idea, but are there enough players to draw the crowds to make such a league viable? There are a handful of local stars that could sell locally, but if they went to teams out of market would they have the same kind of buying power there? I grew up a college sports fan because I loved watching my Hawaii Rainbows/Warriors play. College athletes playing for Hawaii became stars and local legends by playing for the University of Hawaii. There is something magical about the college sports world, but things will and have to change. The question is whether or not the leagues, conferences, and schools will be able to start putting the interests of these student athletes first.
